2 day course: BTEC Level 2 Intermediate Award Physical Restraint Practice (Care and Control) The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of participants to undertake appropriate and effective physical restraint practice to BTEC Level 2 Intermediate Award standards. This course is suited to all public, voluntary and private sector practitioners/officers/ managers for whom violence and the threat of violence is an everyday reality, or for professionals having to cope with clients/service users/customers whose behaviour is a threat to self or others. It is particularly suited to practitioners and frontline managers in the following settings: police, residential care, substance misuse, Criminal Justice, day care, homeless accommodation, youth services, Child Protection, Mental Heath, GP surgeries, Accident and Emergency, outreach and Community safety services including Community Safety Wardens. The course approaches the highly sensitive issue of physical restraint in a holistic way, providing both a legal and professional context within which to apply the methods and techniques taught. When combined with other strategies the BTEC Level 2 Intermediate Award in Physical Restraint Practice can form part of a coherent, whole organisation approach to the management of conflict and violence. By the end of the course participants will be able to: · Understand the relevant areas of legislation and associated regulations in regard to the use of physical restraint with children and vulnerable adults · Understand the concept of “reasonable force” in relation to physical restraint · Understand the key aspects of the Human Rights Act (1998) and how these apply to physical restraint · Understand the key aspects of health and safety legislation and regulations and show how these apply to physical restraint · Understand the meaning of “positional asphyxia” and assess this and the various other risks associated physical restraint and how such risks can be minimised. · Understand the range of physical restraint techniques that exist and demonstrate how to apply these · Explain physical restraint de-escalation and relaxation techniques and demonstrate how to apply these in a way that allows the client or service user to regain self control · Identify the risks associated with alcohol, drugs, and weapons such as knives within a physical restraint context · Understand the difference between non-harmful and restrictive methods of control and when the use of such methods is appropriate including holding, escorting, non-harmful seated restraint. · Identify when the use of more restrictive techniques might be necessary and understand that such actions must be consistent with the principle of “reasonable force” and relevant legislation.

He is a graduate of Stirling University and is an accredited National Federation of Personal Safety trainer, using the most up to date and nationally accepted methods and techniques.
